Video Program & live demonstration:"Ikebana and the Poinsettia of Mexico.
For many of us the beautiful poinsettia with its lovely red leaves is the hallmark of the holidays. Indigenous to Mexico, poinsettias grow wild as tall, colorful shrubs in their native habitat.
Join Lidia Villalobos, Second Master of the Ohara School of Ikebana, as she curates a collection of exquisite vases from her native Mexico. To these regional containers, she marries stunning arrangements using poinsettias. Learn how they grow, how to properly condition them, and how these special blooms can elevate your floral art. Lidia identifies each variety, giving you the opportunity to seek out individual cultivars for their own designs. This event offers a rare glimpse into the beauty of Mexico, the elegance of Ohara Ikebana, and the captivating charm of the poinsettia at its finest.
Lidia will be joining us live from her native Mexico with further information and a Q&A after the video.

Demonstration by Diana Cull, Riji in the Sogetsu School of *Ikebana
"The Shape of the Container"
Diana will demonstrate how to develop your ideas for an ikebana arrangement from your container, specifically its shape.
Look at your container from different angles and decide what feature (s) of the container to emphasize. Then select materials that complement or contrast with it. Think about what characteristics of the materials to use and how to use them, eg. bending, massing, deconstructing, etc. By focusing on the container, you may discover new ideas of composition.
(Adapted from Sogetsu Textbook 3, Lesson 11)
As part of the program, Diana will be providing feedback on the arrangements premade by some workshop participants.

Video program : Budding Fortunes; Japan's Post war Recovery
Professor Nancy Stalker talks us through the competitive strategies of three principal ikebana schools - Ikenobo, Ohara, and Sogetsu - during the 1950's through 1970's. She argues that the same strategies that supported corporate high-speed growth from the 1950s through the 1970s, such as creation of strong brand identity, diversification, and rationalization, led these schools' business to thrive and continue to operate today.
