Video Program on Kasumi Teshigahara "Miniatures" Faye Phillips, Sogetsu teacher econd Sanyo, will be instructing us on how to create miniature Sogetsarrangements with a Valentines focus.
Join us in February for a delightful program featuring charming miniature ikebana arrangements!
This creative idea was first introduced by Kasumi Teshigahara, the second Sogetsu Iemoto. Instead of simply making small ikebana pieces, the concept encourages arranging botanical elements in tiny vessels—an opportunity to let your imagination shine. These petite designs are all about ingenuity and having fun with the art of ikebana.
Before our February meeting, 15 volunteers will have the special opportunity to work with Faye virtually to create these miniature arrangements. With Faye’s guidance, each participant’s originality will shine as they train their hands, eyes, and hearts. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the spirit of Sogetsu and deepen your ikebana journey—no matter which school you belong to!Faye has served as President of the New York State Capital District Sogetsu Study Group since 2022. Previously, Faye held roles as President and Treasurer of Rochester Chapter 53 of I.I. She is also an associate member of the SoMA Sogetsu Branch, Orlando Chapter 132 of I.I., and the Sogetsu Florida Branch. Faye actively exhibits, leads workshops, and teaches both in-person and virtually across New York State and Florida.

Video program : Budding Fortunes; Japan's Post war Recovery
Professor Nancy Stalker talks us through the competitive strategies of three principal ikebana schools - Ikenobo, Ohara, and Sogetsu - during the 1950's through 1970's. She argues that the same strategies that supported corporate high-speed growth from the 1950s through the 1970s, such as creation of strong brand identity, diversification, and rationalization, led these schools' business to thrive and continue to operate today.

Demonstration by Diana Cull, Riji in the Sogetsu School of *Ikebana
"The Shape of the Container"
Diana will demonstrate how to develop your ideas for an ikebana arrangement from your container, specifically its shape.
Look at your container from different angles and decide what feature(s) of the container to emphasize. Then select materials that complement or contrast with it. Think about what characteristics of the materials to use and how to use them, eg. bending, massing, deconstructing, etc. By focusing on the container, you may discover new ideas of composition.
(Adapted from Sogetsu Textbook 3, Lesson 11)
As part of the program, Diana will be providing feedback on the arrangements premade by some workshop participants.

October 11, 202ideo Program & live Demonstration:"Ikebana and the Poinsettia of Mexico.

To these regional containers, she marries stunning arrangements using poinsettias. Learn how they grow, how to properly condition them, and how these special blooms can elevate your floral art.
