Ikebana International (I.I.) is a worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of ikebana.

The organization was founded in 1956 by the late Ellen Gordon Allen whose dream was to create an association uniting the people of the world through their mutual love of nature and enjoyment of ikebana. Today, that dream has spread to over 40 countries/areas.

The motto of the association is “Friendship through Flowers” and any person or organization accepting that objective is welcome to join us as a member of Ikebana International.

I. I. does not teach or endorse any single type of ikebana. It is an association that encompasses many different schools.

The members are people from various parts of the world who enjoy and practice ikebana and have interests in other traditional Japanese art forms. Some schools stress classical styles; others focus on free style, and some a blend of both. Our members gain the opportunity to learn about ikebana of many different schools – their inspirations, styles, philosophy, history, and techniques – We benefit from those interactions through meetings, demonstrations, exhibitions and other events.

Another unique feature of Ikebana International is that the organization was founded by and continues to be administered almost entirely by volunteers.

No prior experience is necessary to join our community! The Sakura Virtual Ikebana Community welcomes individuals of all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned practitioners. We offer a range of resources, including workshops and tutorials, designed to support your journey in learning and mastering Ikebana. Our inclusive environment ensures that everyone can find a place to thrive.

Participation in community events is easy! Once you become a member of Sakura Virtual Ikebana, simply check our events calendar on the website for upcoming workshops, presentations, and cultural programs and register for the program. Events are held virtually, allowing you to join from anywhere. Registration details and any necessary materials will be provided in advance, ensuring you have everything needed to fully engage with our community.

Members of Sakura Virtual Ikebana can also become a member of Ikebana International if they are not already. If you do not have an Ikebana International Chapter near you, you can still become an independent member.

•Three magazine issues of the Ikebana International are published annually.

•Access to all past issues of I.I. newsletters viewable online through the website of I.I. Activities (Publication page) and Sakura News (I.I. Members page).

•Eligibility to participate in Ikebana International World Convention and Regional Conferences.

•Eligibility to join Ikebana International’s 167 chapters worldwide, to participate in chapters’ monthly meetings, enjoy ikebana demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops, fairs, and activities.

Ikebana can be created using a variety of materials, including fresh flowers, branches, leaves, and natural elements like stones. The choice of materials often reflects the season and the intended expression of the arrangement. Additionally, practitioners may use unconventional items, such as recycled materials, to enhance their creative expression while still honoring the principles of Ikebana. We recomend to have an suiban (round container), Kenzan ( flower frog ) and hasami (japanese garden shears) Since there are many Schools of Ikebana, often the materials allowed are dictated by the schools principles.
